We only went to a few breweries in Boulder because we actually spent more time hiking than drinking. There are so many choices out there but one of the breweries we liked the best was Twisted Pine. They have a Sweet Amarillo beer (4.8% ABV, 25 IBU) that was amazzing. It is an American Cream Ale and the light grapefruit flavor is refreshing.

We also enjoyed our visit to Sanitas. I tried the Balaton Cherry Saison (5.9% ABV, 22 IBU) and Eric had the “Poolside” Pale Ale (4.7% ABV, 41 IBU). It was a fun brewery and they had a great patio out back.
We also had great time hiking in the Rocky Mountain National Park. We stayed in Estes Park and our last night there we had dinner at Marys Lake Lodge and tried a few of Marys brews. We sat at the bar had a great view and were able to watch the first football game of the NFL season.
I wasn’t expecting much but I was blown away by the quality. We will go back to Mary’s for sure our next trip to Estes. If you want to check out more of our hiking pics I am posting them to our other blog http://vegetariansouth.blogspot.com

Fullsteam Brewery is from Durham, NC. Their Summer Basil Farmhouse Ale won Best Beer in the first ever 2015 Southern Living Food Awards. It is only 5% ABV which I like and I love basil in anything.

I also tried the Cack-A-Lacky which is a 5% ABV pale ale brewed with ginger. I liked it because the ginger was refreshing not overpowering. It’s not a typical ginger beer but more mellow.

We stay pretty busy and try to spend as much time as we can stand outside on the weekends and thats why I haven’t posted in a few months. Wanted to share a few things I have been drinking lately and have enjoyed.

Last time I was up in Tennessee I picked up a six pack of Sorta IPA it’s made by TailGate Beer a brewery out of Nashville. I like what they are doing. The whole point a drinking craft beer isn’t to get wasted so I do enjoy lower ABV beers because I can try more of them. Sorta IPA is 5% ABV with 44 IBU. It does have a really full flavor but it’s not overly hopped and of course I am a sucker for a good can.

Another good lower ABV beer I have been drinking the summer is Lagunitas DayTime Ale at 4.65% ABV and 54.2 IBU. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10485652059483479879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-618675838597376311.post-6625864548273389412015-05-25T15:51:00.000-07:002015-05-25T15:51:34.597-07:00Summer Wheat BeersIt’s Memorial Day and the unofficial start of summer but it has been hot outside here in Alabama for a while now. When it starts getting hotter outside I turn to lighter beers. Here are two wheat beers I have tried recently and enjoyed. If you have suggestions on other beers I should try this summer please let me know.

If you get a chance to try Blue Pants new summer seasonal wheat beer your should. It’s simply called Wheat with Peach. It is a light refreshing sour brew. A great seasonal out of North Alabama.

I also recently tried Horny Goat Brewing seasonal Watermelon Wheat. I loved this one. You could really taste the fruit flavor in it. It was easy to drink a few at only 5.6% ABV. This is the first beer I have tried from this Milwaukee brewery.

On the way down to Ft. Lauderdale. I had a bit of a layover in Tampa which I didn’t mind so much becuase I had time to had time for couple of beers at Cigar City Brewing. Cigar City has a bar in the airport, near gate C40, but unlike other airport bars (like Good People in Bham airport) Cigar City is set up to brew on site. They have a small tank set up you can see behind the bar. I started with my favorite their IPA, Jai Alai, with 7.5% ABV. I sampled the wheat beer too. It was good.

Friday night when I was in South Florida I went to check out Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park. I have driven past this place dozens of times on past trips and always heard it was great but never had a chance to check it out. The Oakland Park location will be celebrating its two year anniversary in June. According to their website it is a 40,000 sq ft facility powered by a 30 barrel brewhouse and that makes them the largest microbrewery in South Florida.
I tried one of their seasonal’s first, More Moro Blood Orange IPA, with 7.0% ABV. It was good and it was what you would expect from the name citrusy and hoppy.
Next I tried their limited release, Key Lime Pie Berlinerwiss, with 4.5% ABV. I really liked it. It was tart and tangy in a good way.
Non-beer related on the trip I checked out Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and they currently have a Chihuly glass art exhibit that runs through the end of May. It was crazy beautiful there so wanted to share some of those photos too.
They have been around awhile, since 2004, and are based in the town of Farmville. Their beers are good and the logo is cool. This is their Brown Ale (ABV 5.6%). I picked the glass up at a beer fest a few years ago but they sell them cheap on the website too.
I tried one of their specialty beers the S.A. IPA an IPA infused with hot peppers. A lot of times when something is infused I can’t really taste it but this beer was spicy. I liked it but no one else in my group of friends did. It was different for sure. They had three IPAs on tap on that night and thats normally what I gravitate towards. The Black IPA is pictured with the beer cheese nachos below. The beer was good, all the food was crazy good, and the staff was really friendly.
I have talked about Blue Pants Brewery before they are a north Alabama brewery. Their Highwater Hoppy Tripel is 9.0% ABV it is their take on a Belgian. It has a stronger hop flavor than I would normally expect in a tripel but I guess if I had read the bottle first I would have expected that. It's pretty good not my favorite from Blue Pants but I am enjoying it. My husband tried it too even though he is not a tripel fan and he was surprised how much it just tasted like a strong IPA.

Avondale Brewing Company is a Birmingham, AL based company. This is their tasty tasty porter. Vanillaphant Porter (6.2% ABV, 25 IBU) is pretty smooth. It has a light body but it has all the roasted flavor and hoppy goodness you would expect in a good porter.

Is it weird I only like porter in the winter? If you are in Birmingham this is a brewer to check out any time of year.
Back Forty is Gadsden, AL brewer we have mentioned before. One of their brews is called Truck Stop Honey Brown Ale. Well they are also selling the raw honey they use to make it. I was really excited when I found it at a local store today. I love local honey!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10485652059483479879noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-618675838597376311.post-67040290409577392992014-10-31T14:44:00.000-07:002014-10-31T14:44:14.809-07:00Good South Carolina BeerWent to Whole Foods the other day and this is what the beer dude recommended One Claw Rye Pale Ale (5.5% ABV) from Westbrook Brewing in Mt. Pleasant, SC. I don’t think I have tried that many beers from South Carolina and would be interested in suggestions on others to try. What is the best beer from South Carolina?
We stayed at Unicoi State Park in Helen, GA. This is a pic from nearby Lake Winfield Scott. The colors had just started turning at higher elevation but not in Unicoi yet. We did a little hiking and did a little drinking.

We shopped at Betty’s Country Store which had a pretty good selection of beer. Wanted to stick with Georgia beers and found two good ones. I have had plenty of SweetWater beer before and have been to the brewery in Atlanta but never tried Hop Hash Double IPA. It was amazing. I really fell in love with it. The ABV is 7.8% with 100 IBUs.

Also tried Hop Dang Diggity from Jekyll Brewing. First of all I love the name of the beer that just makes me laugh. Jekyll Brewing is base in Alpharetta, GA. This IPA has an ABV of 6.7% with 74 IBUs.
I have never really given shandy beers a try. Lemon beer just sounds weird. But when I saw this strawberry shandy I wanted to give it a try. It is a seasonal from The Traveler Beer Company with 4.4% ABV. The company is based out of Vermont. I was amazed by how much you could taste strawberry. The strawberry hits you right away and the after taste is more lemony. Its a good summer beer and I am glad I tried it but its not something I want to drink all the time.

I saw online they just put out a pumpkin shandy, Jack-O-Traveler, I want to put that on my list to try on tap this fall. I am not a huge fan of pumpkin beer either though. I don't love all the spice that is normally in them. I guess what I am saying is I am sick of the summer heat and Sooooooo ready for fall that I would be willing to try a pumpkin beer. Wow now that's a glowing endorsement of pumpkin beer right?
Some friends of ours came over last night and brought this hard cider with them. I like ciders but sometimes they are just too sweet. I loved this one! It reminded me a lot of lambic style beer. It is made in the style of Quebec ice ciders and has a nice dry finish. Iceman is part of Angry Orchard’s cider house collection. It has a surprising 10% ABV that can sneak up on you quick.
So checking out another brew from North Alabama tonight. Blue Pants Brewery is in Madison, AL which if you are not familiar with the state is in the Huntsville area. Spare Pair is a seasonal they are calling it a 2 in 1 beer. They brewed two different beers and combined to make this pale ale. It is 6% ABV it is a darker color and has a malty taste. You can check out their website at http://www.bluepantsbrew.com/
So this is a great west coast IPA out of California. Nectar IPA from Humboldt Brewing ABV 6.7% with IBU of 60. It has a nice hoppy nose and a dark amber color. Very light and refreshing with maybe a hint of grapefruit but little to no after taste. I really want to try one of their other beers too. They have a Hemp Ale I almost picked up instead of this but wasn't in the mood for a brown. Oh well there is always next time. I forgot about it but when I got home today this sweet package was waiting on me. I won two really cool beer glasses and lucky me I had some Fat Tire in the fridge to test them out with. Thanks New Belgium!
Lots of events going on the week. Did anyone go to the beer fests in Huntsville or Chattanooga this past weekend? I am curious how they went. We were in Chattanooga this weekend but didn't make it downtown early enough because we got stuck doing Mother's Day crap. I am more of a night drinker anyways. Day beer just makes me sleepy.

So what are we drinking? Picked up a six pack of Firewater IPA cans. I'm a sucker for cans. Firewater IPA (ABV 6.0%) is from Catawba Brewing co. They are a North
Carolina based brewer. It was good not great. Would be willing to try some
of there other beers sometime maybe its better on draft.
Naked Pig Pale Ale is from Back Forty Beer Co out of Gadsden, Alabama. ABV is 6% and IBU 43. Back Forty is a fairly new company like most of the breweries in the state but now that alcohol laws are starting to loosen we are finally able to get some fun local beers. You can check out their story and other beers on their site www.backfortybeer.com.
The second beer we wanted to share with you is from north Alabama, Monkeynaut IPA from Straight to Ale. ABV is 7.25% and IBU 70. Straight to Ale is based out of Huntsville, AL which is also known as "The Rocket City" because of the US Space and Rocket Center that is located there and the work they have done with the space program and thus the space themed name. Monkeynaut is a citrus floral hoppy beer. Check out the sweet can. You can visit http://www.straighttoale.com/ for more info on this Alabama brewer.
My husband and I are beer lovers from Birmingham, AL. We decided to start this new blog because we post a lot of beer crap on our other blog, VegetarianSouth,
and decided all the beer photos need a proper home. We aren't beer
experts but hope to introduce people to new beers and breweries. We are
also outdoorsy. We like to hike and kayak. We camp and fish a little too
on the side.
